Mastering Creative Light

I was offered an opportunity to attend a Dave Brosha photography workshop this week, called "Mastering Creative Light" and am I ever glad I went.  Although I feel like I am a lifetime away from mastery it was quickly clear to me that I could adapt these lighting techniques to my own style and point of view - I will just have to be patient with myself while I troubleshoot to get the outcome I desire.  Creatively using artificial light is definitely a skill to learn and hone.  

It was eye-opening to analyze photographs and pick apart the layers of lighting, while learning how to use various lighting to achieve whatever output I could dream of.   It was also fascinating to see how a few simple tweaks could totally change the mood of a photograph.  The addition of artificial light has opened up a nearly unrestricted world that I previously had to wait for (as in the desired time of day, weather and conditions) to capture the images I wanted. The collision of natural and artificial lighting has the gears in my mind turning and I look forward to working on developing these fresh skills and adding another element to my pieces.  

We were given the opportunity to work with a variety of lighting equipment while practicing with models who were all so generous, gracious and patient with us as we learned these new skills.  I will admit it was a little frustrating at times to have such tight time limitations to work with the models while hurriedly composing our shots and troubleshooting our lighting but the point was to get our feet wet and start the learning process.  Now it's time to dive in!
